compile software source

let's say I want to compile mplayer source as an example. I want to modify a small part of the source code and compile it again. Compiling the whole source with
Code:
./configure;make;make install;
however, takes time.

is it possible to re-compile only the source file which I modified in the source code? so that I do not need to compile the whole source again.

you do not need ./configure again. make should know what was changed.
