Compile programs for PPC

I am no expert in how linux works, but I am about to buy myself an Apple 15" PowerBook. Will I meet any problems when I compile programs/kernel on this a PPC? Will all the programs that compile on x86 also compile on PPC?

I also wonder about how good the PPC Debian/Ubuntu repositories is (how many pre-compiled packages compared to x86), but this is maybe not the right forum for that question.

Most software should compile fine on the PPC, but not necessarily everything. Unless it specifically states it won't work on PPC, or there is a dedicated PPC version of it, you should be able to compile it.

I don't know any solid numbers for the PPC packages out there, but there are plenty of Linux PPC users out there, so I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure there will be enough packages to get by on.

I believe Gentoo have the best PPC support so far as you have to compile everything from source anyways...
Using PPC mean you will sometime (often?) have to stick to older (read : not up-to-date) version unless someone create a binary compiled for PPC (or modify the source code if needed).
