Comparing FTP servers?

Is there a program or Web site that I can put a list of FTP servers into and it will tell me which would be the fastest to download from and how many users are using each site. I keep trying to install Mandriva from FTP and half way through the install aborts because the server became full. I guess that ping can tell how fast a site is, but I don't know how to read the information that it prints out.

Ping requets are in miliseconds usually. That is the response time to the ping packet that it sends to the server. A server can respond to a ping quickly but still be a slow connection if people are downloading from it.

As for pulling a FTP imformation you may need to google it. If its a anonymous FTP you might be able to find a program from the internet that interperates the information but I dont know how public that information is accessable from an ftp server and if its reported the same way from different servers.
