Common services
 

Yep I'm gunna do another thread about which services to have running, but hopefully helping me will help many others as I've already turned off most services, and you guys can explain the ones I have left and why they should/shouldnt be running. :)

This setup results in GKrellm reporting 46 procs, 2 users and 54Megs ram used on Mandrake 9.1 with KDE 3.1.0. All are started on boot.

More that I though :o

Ok, now as I dont have the dialup modem used until I launch Kppp, and dont have any other network, I'm guessing I can kill off internet and network. IPTables is doing it's thing despite what MCC/DrakXServices says :rolleyes:

I dont start the aRts soundserver when KDE does, so which sound service can be stopped?

I have nothing scheduled in DrakCronAt so can I halt atd and crond?
CUPS -> I rarely print and dunno if I'm actually using CUPS to.
kheader needed?
Numlock, worth turning off? I think it's set to no change how it finds the numlock state anyway.
Rawdevices? I dont use Oracle or play Dvds
Switchprofile?
Xinetd? Could be vital, could be useless.

I don't know whether the Mandrake system includes the ntsysv
If it does while trying ntsysv you can type F1 to find what a particular service does.
If you know bash scripting go to /etc/init.d and check out the services
and what each one does -also check out the /etc/xinitd.d
you don't need to use atd/crond
numlocks ->seems funny
rawdevice->nice to turn it on
xinetd->the modern inetd
syslog->always required
random->are you trying to write some programs?
linuxconf->not required
xfs->the font server(is it outdated?)

Unless you're printing, or running a print server, then you don't need cups.
If you want a better alternative (better performance at least) try metalog instead of syslogd and klogd. It might be a bit of an annoyance to set up on a distro like Mandrake though.

I did test this a bit, I turned off a bunch of services and nothing much complained. I think once when booting it did some hardware or network configuring on it's own, instead of a nice service doing it for it.
The drawback is one of these resets my modem and I have to rerun hcfpciconfig again as root or it cant find /dev/ttySHCF0 :rolleyes:

I tried not booting:

atd
crond
cups
internet
network
numlock
random
rawdevices
xinetd

GKrellm did report a few less processes, and maybe 2megs less ram used...but the hugest change was when I looking in Fluxbox!
Only about 30 processes, 1 user, and less ram use too :D

So I've decided that as I like my stable system, and these services arent doing much to affect my pc, I'll leave the helper ones running.

And spend more time configuring Flux ;)

Flux has a lot of features it would be nice to see in KDE, and KDE has the eyecandy it would be nice to see in Flux. :rolleyes:

Turn off linuxconf. You don't use it, I guess and it takes your resources.

Ok, thanks. It says it may occasionally make changes at boot time iirc, so it made sense that it needed to be started at boot, but it is always running which doesnt.
