Commodore 64 emulators
 

Hi,
As I have unfinished business with the Dutch team on 'Microprose Soccer', after many years I'd like to try and get my revenge, but it doesn't seem I'll be able to do it unless I buy an old C64 or a joystick. I've installed Vice, X64, CC64, I even tried through wine, by installing the windows version of cc64 (but during the download required by the installer I get this error: 'C:\windows\temp\VSD86f6.tmp\DotNetFX35\dotNetFX35\dotNetFX35setup.exe cannot be verified'). There's no way to move anything after the game's been loaded, no matter how I change Vice configurations. I even tried Jac64, in java, but it doesn't load anything.
Any way to help me get my revenge, after so many years?

exe files are for windows and do not natively run on Linux.

What distro, arch, and version, are your running?

But many exe actually run under wine, and I have installed a few programs with it. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04. It seems the problem is with some Active X.

Why try and use emulator(or whatever you want to call wine) when most of the apps your listed have native versions (vice, Frodo, ccs64, J64, ec64, etc)? Essentially using wine you are using an emulator to run an emulator. Last I heard ActiveX did not work in wine.

Edit: Some (if not all) of those should be available in your repos (via your package manager).

I had a similar problem getting an Amstrad CPC464 emulator to work (I was missing Starquake!). If there are packaged versions, as per the previous post then that is your best bet.

If not, I found the solution was to keep trying, either windows versions in Wine, or Dos versions in DosBox until you get one that works. Does seem odd to run an emulator on an emulator - but if it works - why not?

If all else fails you could install 'xspect' the ZX Spectrum emulator (that is in synaptics package manager), although I don't remember any soccer games on that. :)

just noticed 'xmess-x' is packaged for Ubuntu..

So it seems there's actually no solution for this problem. I had already tried those emulators (Frodo etc.) but they didn't work. I unsuccessfully tried with a joypad, too. There's no way to play the game. That's sad.

It would be really odd if vice do not play your game, if it is properly installed. Among others, I play jumpman without issue. I also use mame to play a huge selection of the old atari games.

I installed and compiled vice, and it didn't work. If you have any suggestion about how to make it work I'd be glad.

Seems to play fine (characters move, etc). What kind of error is it spitting out or what do you mean by it didn't work? It would also help us if you would tell us the distro, arch, and version that you are running.
