Question command-line webcam app?

Is there an application that can be run via the command-line that would capture the image from the webcam and store it to the local machine (as say a jpg)?

I'm looking for something that I can script, which is why I'm looking for the command-line.

The webcam is USB made by Labtec, system running gentoo 2.6.8 if that helps.

Thanks.

capture images continuously from a video4linux device and save them in ppm or jpeg

I wrote this in 3 hours so don't expect much functionality. Besides that, it works for more than three years in our lab with no problems at all.
