Combining Xournal annotations with original PDF to get single PDF file

I've made annotations in Xournal and wish to send them via email. I do not know how to overlay the annotation file with the original PDF so I can do this.

I am using arch linux (so pdftk DOES NOT WORK). I would prefer ghostscript or something command-line based. Any ideas?

EDIT: fixed; looks like Xournal has the function hidden in an 'legacy pdf' option.
