bluefish is pretty quick and good, but for real speed you'd want somethign like emacs, which might be a bit obscure for you

Vim

Vim loads fast and does the coloring. If you want Vim with GUI, try gVim.

I do all my (X)HTML in it. However, Vim takes a bit getting used to and there are people out there who don't like it...

I've got your answer: Nedit! It's wicked fast, has good markup and indentation for various coding languages, and uses fairly obvious key bindings (for those of use coming from Windows). The whole program is one binary:

bryan@whirlwind:~$ ls -lh /usr/bin/nedit
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1.8M Mar 4 07:42 /usr/bin/nedit*
