see if vlc is in the repository: apt-get install vlc

if it's not I'd recommend trying to find a package somewhere, as vlc is not the most straight forward thing to build yourself ( it's not too bad, just alot of dependencies).

have you tried something other than totem, like xine_ui? ( to start xine_ui, make sure it's installed and type "xine" at the command prompt).

How did you install kaffeine on xine?

During my install progress there is written I need xlibs which is already installed (xlibs, xlibs-data).

Can you tell me which lib kaffeine does need?

what method are you using to install it ( package manager, source, etc..) and what distro are you using?

I am using agnula (debian multimedia distro) and had tried to use the binaries first.

I installed xine-lib-1.0.1.tar.gz. (./configure, make, make install) without bigger problems and no finally without any error messages.

Afterwards I tried to install the xine-ui-0.99.2 what resulted in a message that I should install xine-lib first (??):

-> configure: error: *** You should install xine-lib first *** <-

So I wanted to try kaffeine. The ./configure process resulted in:

-> checking for X... configure: error: Can't find X includes. Please check your installation and add the correct paths! <-
