codec for playing .mpeg and .avi files
What codec should I install for playing .mpeg and .avi files.
Actually avi file is playing well, but does not produce any sound.
I am using Ubuntu 8.04

I don't know how to install codecs for Ubuntu but you could try installing a different player that installs whatever dependencies it needs and hopefully should include the codecs you need. Have you tried installing VLC media player? What player have you tried to play the files?

If there's no sound I doubt it's a codecs problem. Double check your mixer settings and make sure that neither master nor pcm are muted/zeroed. Do regular sound files work ok?
