CMI 8330 in MANDRAKE 8.0

I need some help in order to set up my sound card completely... I have a rather old motherboard with a built-in CMI8330 sound card... since, I haven't been able to use my joystick and I cannot play my music CD.

On the other hand, I enter the command line: sndconfig and it detect my siund card, but when it try to test it, it gives some errors.

Anybody that may help with some tips and procedures to set it up correctly??

Thanks !

By the way, I am using Linux Mandrake 8.0

I'm wondering myself if CMI-8738 sound cards are supported under Linux becuase they are fairly new and i want to get my second machine up & running with Mandrake as well.

How the hell did I miss this thread?

Both cards are supported, I had an onboard CMI8330 as well (PC-Chips boards). Apparently you can use ALSA for it, but I could never get that to work. I managed to get it to work by recompiling my kernel to include soundcard support, OSS drivers and CMI8330 as the only things in the sound section.

Some advice given to me initially, which I must admit I didn't think was particularly helpful, was to disable the onboard s/c and put in a cheap PCI s/c. Since building my new computer, I now realise that this was good advice.
