Cloning a Dual boot linux

Am in kinda fix.

Created a dual boot machine. Window XP and then Suse 9.3 pro. Loading is managed by GRUB.

Have tried all sorta programs for cloning the hard disk.

The HDD is 80GB with 60 for NTFS and 18 for Linux (root) EXT3 type and 2 for swap.

All the partitions are recognised correctly while the cloning operation is performed by Ghost 2003. The problem comes during the startup of the cloned drive.

Windows XP partition boots fine but when I select Suse linux from GRUB, the following messages appear:

--------------------------------------------------------------

.
.

loading kernel /fs/jbd/jbd.ko
loading kernel /fs/ext3/ext3.ko

Waiting for device /dev/root to appear: .... not found...exiting to /bin/sh
sh: can't access tty; job control turned off.
$

---------------------------------------------------------------

I cannot execute any command whatsoever at the $ prompt except pwd.

Why is my cloning failing despite ghost 03 completing the 100% process?

Any ideas..anyone?

You have to come forward with more info.

Were the source and target disks identical in size? and same type(not IDE mixed with Sata)?

Have you removed the source disk so that Suse's partition designations are still valid? or are they still both running inside the box?

Did you clone the entire disk or just partition to partition? Has any of the partition changed in size?

If the source and target disks were identical in size and type then you could have saved a Ghost license by hook up the two disks and type

dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb bs=64M
