clonezilla --rescue mode stuck in loop?

Hi everyone,
I used clonezilla quite a lot to clone healthy discs.

Now it's the first time I'm trying to clone one with a lot of bad sectors. My goal is to safe as much data as possible.

First clonezilla run was done without --rescue option and it stopped at 96% because of errors.

I started a new run with the --rescue option 8 hours ago (source disc 2TB).
Somewhere in the 9x% area it started to throw me these errors:

"WARNING: Can't read bad sector at 100.000, lost data"

I get these Warnings until it reaches something at "bad sector at 10.000.000".
Then it starts at 100.000 again and again and again.

Im seeing these error for about 2 hours now and one round from 100.000 to 10.000.000 takes ~14 seconds.

For me it looks like something is wrong but since I never used --rescue I wanted to know if I should wait or abort it and start again before I leave my office.

Thanks a lot!
Effman

I think you should use ddrescue instead. Here's a good tutorial: https://datarecovery.com/rd/how-to-c...with-ddrescue/

There are a number of ways to save data off a failing hard drive or a faulty file system.

Be sure you are working on a damaged hard drive to begin with rather than a filesystem.

Using one of the programs like ddrescue that ignores bad data could create some image of your drive.

Clonezilla will attempt to use a file by file copy of a drive and that is where you are in trouble here.

There may be a few other ways to save data off from using the program "testdisk" to other bit by bit or file by file means that ignore problems.

Thanks for your replies. I cancelled clonezillas job and mounted the recovered disc. I could mount all three partitions but the one I need had only system data on it.
I'll give ddrescue a try now. If that doesn't work, I'll have to setup a new machine.
Thanks again!

Hey Effman,

I echo AwesomeMachine's recommendation of ddrescue.

Let us know how you make out.
