Client login system for accessing internet

Hi guys. I have a question to ask. At my work department, we have a broadband internet using PPPOE with dynamic IP.My boss wants a system where people who wants to use the broadband must key in username and password so that only authorised person can access the broadband.the boss also want a log whenever a person login and logout of the system. My idea is to build a PPPoE linux server so that it becomes always-on broadband internet. However is there a software/system that can ask a person for username & password before he/she can access internet and also log the time a person login and logout? Can a proxy server do that?

It's been a while since I've set up proxy servers but I believe that you are able to set up users on them. Look into Squid, it's a proxy server for Linux and doesn't take very long to set up.

Another method is to look into FreeRADIUS, which is the system many hotels use to allow their guests access. It does provide comprehensive logging services, and if setup correctly, is very secure. It is suitable for wired and wireless connections. Take a look at this: http://wiki.freeradius.org/index.php...sked_Questions

Thank you for the feedback. I have never heard of FreeRadius before. I'll read up more on it.

No actual experience with using it but here is a complete package that might be worth taking a look.
