Clementine - says it's playing a track but play head not moving

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 XFCE on an Acer C720 Chromebook using Crouton.

I've installed Clementine 1.2 as my music player of choice and up until last week it was playing my FLAC files from a USB hard drive beautifully. Now I select a track, the listing pulses nicely and a pop up box in the top right says the track is playing, but... the playhead is not moving and there is no sound. I have tried removing and re-installing Clementine to no avail.
I also have Rhythmbox installed and it has developed exactly the same problem.
I suspect an underlying dependency issue, but I am now way out of my depth.

Does anyone have any ideas please?
Many thanks
David
