It looks that spamd is already running and listening on port 783

Thumbs up could not create INET socket on 127.0.0.1:783: Address already in use

hey boss this all about the spamassassin socket.

Restarting SpamAssassin Mail Filter Daemon: No spamd found running; none killed.
error: spamd: could not create INET socket on 127.0.0.1:783: Address already in use
spamd: could not create INET socket on 127.0.0.1:783: Address already in use

-----------
Just do this
-----------
#netstat -luntp | grep 783

tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:783 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 2685/spamd

-------------
#rm -f /var/lock/subsys/spamassassin

then

#cat /var/run/spamd.pid
ruterns number like this which is process id:
2685

then
kill 2685

then run spamassassin again
#/etc/init.d/spamassassin start
#/etc/init.d/spamassassin restart
----------------

It gets fine.

If there is still the problem out there then restart sendmail/MTA and which might be using the spamassassin socket making it lock. Other wise restart your pc /or if not reinstall the spamassassin after taking backup.

problem spam again

thanks for reply me,

Install so again, then that is not what happens

this is the output of netstat, I did what you told me, but yet still leaving the same

[root@localhost init.d]# netstat -luntp | grep 783
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:783 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 4148/spamd.pid

when restart spamassassin is ok, but when run spamd this is the output

[root@localhost init.d]# spamd
[4385] warn: server socket setup failed, retry 1: spamd: could not create INET socket on 127.0.0.1:783: Address already in use
[4385] warn: server socket setup failed, retry 2: spamd: could not create INET socket on 127.0.0.1:783: Address already in use
[4385] error: spamd: could not create INET socket on 127.0.0.1:783: Address already in use
spamd: could not create INET socket on 127.0.0.1:783: Address already in use

Do you know why?

thank you very much, again

How do you restart spamassassin? Could you give us more info about your distribution, how did you install spamassassin and how you're starting it?
Note that spamd is the daemon version of spamassassin, so if you use a startup script to restart spamassassin you don't have to run spamd separately.

I'm work with CentOS 5.0, the spamassassin version is 3.2.5, I install with make and make install, while installation showell that
.configure-- prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc/mail/spamassassin--datadir=/usr/share/spamassassin--enable --ssl= no
checking where we are across compiling .....no
checking for socket in -lsocket ....no
checking for connect in -linet...no
checking for t_accept in -lnsl..no
but the installation is fine.
i restart spamassassin with /etc/init.d/spamassassin restart and all is ok, I'm a new user then run spamd in the shell just curious and i try investigate that was it, because need mount a transparent proxy with p3scan, spamassassin and clamav, then i want know why this. About p3scan it's fine, in clamav it's the same output, when write calmd in the shell say me this

Tue Aug 18 13:03:14 2009 -> ERROR: TCP: bind() error: Address already in use
Tue Aug 18 13:03:14 2009 -> Closing the main socket.

I hope explain me, and thanks

The purpose is to know the configuration and use of these 3 programs, working together, so that after investigating the way to retrieve false positives in spamassassin, but first i've know all about this.
thanks again for your help.

That is what I'm telling you. When you use a startup script to start a daemon (like spamd and clamd in your case) the daemon starts and listens on a specific port. So there is no need to run again the daemon binary from command line and if you do so, it will complain that the port is already in use.

I'm sorry, but I have never used p3scan. Anyway take a look at the last 2 examples here (as they use iptables to redirect traffic). To test th e setup, you can send yourself an email containing a test virus (like eicar) or the sample-spam.txt from spamassassin and see what happens.
I would suggest you to use amavisd instead of p3scan, because is more widely used, so you can find more documentation and assistance if you have problems.

Regards
