CIOverlay crashes video players

using kubuntu feisty, with an nvidia quadrofx and the non-free drivers.

if i enable CIOverlay in my xorg.conf, all video players (xine, kaffeine, vlc, mplayer, etc) die whenever they try to play video. i also have Composite disabled. if CIOverlay is disabled, video plays fine. but, i need it to run Maya. this is the first time i've ever run into this, actually, and have used maya and many video players happily on an assortment of other linux distros, so maybe it's something in this version of X ... or this version of the linux drivers.
