CIFS Server? (Gentoo, either 2.4 or 2.6)

I've gotten SAMBA to work (with the help of webmin) to share a filesystem on my gentoo box to the rest of the internal network, and I'm wondering if there is any way to securely share it across the internet to windows/linux boxes in a simalar fasion. I've searched around on Google, and found something called cifs, but that looks like it's just the next version of smb.. would this work for me? Is there even any Linux servers for CIFS? If not, what would work....

A couple of things come to mind when I read your post. I think there is multiple solutions to this problem and one of them I think would suit your needs. Here is what I thought of:

Secure FTP
SSH
VPN (Virtual Private Network)

The first two options are software based for the most part while the last option would depend on the routers between the client on the internet and your home network. I'm not sure if these are methods that you thought of so I thought I would just throw them out there. Good luck.
