Chromium and Google's Sync

I'm doubtful, but I come before you with a question...

On an old system I'm trying to make useful again, I've got most everything working acceptably, except for Chrome, even after trimming as much fat from it as possible and running it single process (for the purposes of this machine, it only uses 2 tabs).

Chromium, on the other hand, performs much better. Unfortunately, the Chromium build does not support Google's Sync with encrypted data. One of the goals of the system was to be synced with 2 other machines running Chrome for access from different homes.

Is there a dev build or a timeline for getting that sync support back into Chromium? Or what do I need to disable from the sync settings on the other machines/dashboard to make Chromium sync?
