chown: changing ownership Operation not permitted

Hi,
I am trying to install oracle 11g in linux 5 x64.

I have created the following folder under home/cdhar/
mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1

Now I need to change owner of the folder, but when I give the following command

[root@hdk01ytt cdhar]# chown -R gbuora:gbuinst u01
chown: changing ownership of `u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1': Operation not permitted

I checked with cat /etc/sysconfig/selinux and SELINUX=disabled.

what could be the issue? Please suggest

thanks,
cdhar

I tried, but could not reproduce the problem you've observed.

It says the file was created under /home/cdharhome/cdhar/
mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1, so I assume the leading / after the mkdir -p command shouldn't be there, and file is located at:

home/cdhar/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1

using root, I created guy1 and guy2. In guy1's directory I recreated your path, and passed ownership to guy2 without problem. I tried to pass ownership to an invalid user and group and got a different error.

can you post the output of the following:

[root@hdk01ytt cdhar]# ls -lah
[root@hdk01ytt cdhar]# lsattr
[root@hdk01ytt cdhar]# ls -Z

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Please find the asked details as below.
What I have observed is in root folder with root user I can create the directory and can give the permissions using chown and chmod.
But if I create directory and try to give the permissions in home/cdhar then the issue is coming.

[root@hdk01ytt cdhar]# ls -lah

I have created u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1 under opt/ and able to run chown and chmod.
But now I am getting following error

[gbuora@hdk01ytt]#./runInstaller

xclock is working fine in home/cdhar user, but not working in case of root and gbuora.

thanks.
