choosing window manager

i just re-installed linux on my computer, and after having done so 3 times in a row, i decided to chuck on all the packages (i lost my auto disk and couldn't be bothered selecting them individually)

anyway, now i have a new problem. i guess not to much a problem as something i just want to know how to do.

of course, now BOTH gnome and kde are installed, and it starts gnome by default (i guess). how can i change it to load kde when i start up. could this be incorporated into the boot loader??

i have no probs using gnome, but i dont like the idea that i dont always have full control of my computer (for fear of it taking over:p )

thanks

If it is a Red Hat system you can do a switchdesk kde at the command line. Or you can edit/make a .xinitrc file in the users home directory tha says
exec kde

Or when you login to kde it should ask you if you want to use kde for future logins - just say yes.

ok thanks.
i will try those as soon as gnome recovers from what appears to be a crash. if this is a sign of what is to come, i dont like gnome. feels like im back in the windows98 days, and they werent fun times.

what distro are you using, the latest GNOME is good and reliable.

i am using redhat 8. downloaded the iso's a month or so ago.

tangle and david,
switchdesk kde did not work. well it did (said it had), i then logged out, logged in (nothing came up asking me to set kde as default) and from all appearances, it still looked like gnome, except no taskbar.

now, i am trying to reboot, and my x server won't load, and i have a little flashing cursor on a black screen.

so anyway, i will try and rescue this, but can you try and shed some more light on the original problem??

david_ross 05-24-2003 06:25 PM

It will only ask you if you want to set kde as the default if you login with kde.

With bluecurve Gnome and KDE look almost the same. are you sure your in Gnome?

adriaanbw 05-24-2003 07:31 PM

yes almost positive.
i have used kde before, and this does not behave like kde... context menus are different etc

the problem is fixed now... i couldn't rescue the system (nothing lost but time) so i reformated and reinstalled, this time selecting what i wanted, and gnome was not one of them.

take that gnome! :D

At the login screen, click session (that's what I think it is, I'm using RH9 and I think they're the same). Select KDE there. If it asks, tell it you want that a default.

adriaanbw 05-24-2003 08:38 PM

thanks... i believe that would work, although i cannot test it as i dont have gnome on my system anymore!!

will try it next time though!!

Under RH8 (and this is a theory) the session button should show all your window managers - so if you go for fluxbox etc they should be listed there.
