Choosing a terminal program
 

I am not familiar with all of the various terminal programs available. For years I have used konsole from KDE3/Trinity. The main reasons are the persistent tab bar and the built-in support for Bookmarks. I still use konsole-trinity in Fedora 21 despite using the mate desktop.

KDE konsole is still much the same, but uses the new style tab bar where tabs stretch across the entire window and don't really look like tabs. Moreso, I don't really want to use KDE apps anyway. Too much overhead and I want to avoid any potential for pulling in the three pillars of KDE. The camel's nose in the tent syndrome. :)

Mostly I use Mate, but mate-terminal does not support a persistent tab bar. Adding a new tab causes the entire window to abruptly resize and is somewhat like a proverbial kick in the shins each time that happens. I suppose I could find a way to make my default mate terminal to always open with two tabs to avoid that window glitch.

Yet even if I did that, the lack of built-in bookmarks is a serious productivity impediment for me. Just too many years of using them in KDE3/Trinity. I don't really want to revert to kludges such as manually typing command line aliases.

Yes, I can and will continue using konsole-trinity, but terminal program recommendations are welcomed if the app supports bookmarks and a persistent tab bar.

Install every terminal that the distro offers and try them all. Generally you have two or more on each distro and many more in software/yum.

For me they just have to have green on black background. :)

I haven't used terminator, but I've used almost almost everything else, including gnome-terminal and many of its clones, plus older terminals such as xterm and rxvt. Konsole remains my preference, primarily because of its configurability.

Thus far the only emulators I found to support bookmarks is kde-konsole and trinity-konsole. I wonder how users of other terminal emulators seamlessly cd to other directories. Er, other than manually typing or using command line aliases. I have 18 bookmarks that I use routinely. Very handy.
