chmod help

chmod 755 gives me the permissions over a file, but what if i want someone else to be able to read the file without editing it? is there some sort of list of numbers that will work and so on?

the manual for chmod doesnt give any information at all about this, and i have heard that there are a website with a list of many numbers combinations.if anyone knows, thanks in advance.

do you not think that "755" actually means something? in actual fact those permissions do exactly what you want. check the chmod manpage for details of how to understand permission masks.
