chkconfig in debian

Is there an equivalent command or program I can install in debian that works the same as chkconfig in red hat? It would be much faster and convinient then having to manually edit all the rc[1-6].d files.

Also, speaking of services, I want to do a cleanup in mine, so is there any stuff in here I should not touch? Some I know what it is but most of it I have no clue.

I know this is kind of long, (worse then a new xp install with sp2 ) but hoping to clean it up,just need to know if there's anything in there I can't touch.

I'm assuming all these are fund in the rc.d files which is why I also need a program like chkconfig since deleting all those manually would take ages given allot of them are duplicated in different runlevels.

I think you are looking for update-rc.d and invoke-rc.d also sysv-rc-conf is very handy.

for the running services, please tell what you are using this box for.

1259 ? 00:00:00 portmap - im not exactly sure what portmap does but I think other network services like samba may depend on it.
1406 ? 00:00:04 spamd - spamassasin. you dont need one unless running a mail server or using it for filterring personal mail.
1437 ? 00:00:00 named - bind DNS server.
1463 ? 00:00:00 courierlogger, 1470 ? 00:00:00 couriertcpd,1471 ? 00:00:00 authdaemond.pla - courier IMAP daemon services.
1485 ? 00:00:00 inetd - internet super server(other network services are spawned from it)
1489 ? 00:00:00 lpd - lpr/lpd printer spooling system. dunno if you need one.
1448 ? 00:00:00 lwresd - Lightweight Resolver Daemon hm... never heard of it.
1505 ? 00:00:00 mysql* - mysql database stuff obviously
1592 ? 00:00:00 atalkd - Netatalk is an implementation of the AppleTalk Protocol Suite for BSD-derived systems. I guess not much of use if you dont have macs on your network.
1602 ? 00:00:00 papd, 1604 ? 00:00:00 afpd - ^^
1699 ? 00:00:00 master - dont know, could be mail related.
1706 ? 00:00:00 pickup - postfix mail server.
1707 ? 00:00:00 qmgr - same.
1762 ? 00:00:00 postmaster - probably to.
1775 ? 00:00:00 pg_autovacuum - postgresql database.
1780 ? 00:00:00 nmbd, smbd - samba sharing.
1801 ? 00:00:00 rpc.statd - NFS file sharing.
1852 ttyS0 00:00:00 upsd.sl - APC UPS Power Management. got one ?
and apache web server and sshd - openSSH server.

so you have a lot of network services running, which shouldn't be there unless your box is a mail/file/web server.
EDIT: ok, judging from your previous threads you do run something like that
