chkconfig command for RH9?

I am reading a book that tells me there is a chkconfig command in Fedora 2.4. This command doesn't seem to work in RH9 is it possible that they changed the name, or maybe it needs to be PATHed, or maybe it does not exist. Also I am having the same problem with the shutdown command.

I don't recall if it's is installed on RH9 . Are you running them as root ( su - ) ?
You could run the commands: whereis chkconfig and whereis shutdown
also
rpm -qa | grep chkconfig
rpm -qa | grep shutdown

You could install them with apt or yum if they are available for that version of RH.

Checked to see if they are installed and they are not how would I install them? Why wouldn't they have come pre-installed?

You may not have selected the group they are in when you did the install. Can't recall off hand what group that is, System Tools, Administrative Tools etc etc.
You should be able to install them with apt-get or yum.
For example:
apt-get install chkconfig
apt-get install shutdown

You can download it from http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3?stat...=apt&srodzaj=3

I google pbone and rpmfind to get some rpm packages.
pbone apt-get rpm

You might also consider something more current like Fedora 4 . One thing to note, if you do go with FC4, they dropped apt-get and are flying with yum. On FC4, yum is installed so you don't have to go looking for it.
