Check monitor resolution on Debian Sid XFree 4.3

hey guys,
I have been looking around but am not able to find much.I want to check the resolution capabilities of my monitor under X.
I am currently using 1024x768 and i want to go to 1280x1024 if possible.
I did change my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to ue 1280x1024 but that gives me black edges on the corners and i am not able to drag anything outside of my wallpaper.
i thought this was since my wallpaper was 1024 so i changed that to 1280 and i still got the same problem.
so i was wondering if my monitor allows me to use 1280x1024.
Also if my monitor does not allow it generically...can i use my video card to make it use 1280x1024.I have a NVIDIA GEforce 32mb card and i have the drivers installed running on a 2.6.4 kernel.
can someone please help me here.I really would like a finer resolution.
