well looking at them glxgears results you definetaly don't have 3d capabilites, and your on the right track by trying to install the nvidia drivers (which is what you have to do)
but with that error message that means you don't have the kernel source installed, so you'll have to do that, and then try to install the drivers again.

well the thing is i had it installed fine.
i also installed the kernel source from rpm, but maybe i need to get the latest source, which i thought i had.

uname -a
Linux linux 2.4.20-4GB-athlon #1 Wed Aug 6 18:27:52 UTC 2003 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux

kernel-source-2.4.20.SuSE-62.i586.rpm

updated source was -100 which suse online update said it installed.

that the installer will need to compile a new kernel interface.

You appear to be compiling the NVIDIA kernel module with
a compiler different from the one that was used to compile
the running kernel. This may be perfectly fine, but there
are cases where this can lead to unexpected behaviour and
system crashes.

If you know what you are doing and want to override this
check, you can do so by setting IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH.

In any other case, set the CC environment variable to the
name of the compiler that was used to compile the kernel.

thats what was in my kernel log

get the kernel source from cd1:
/suse/i586/
