check download in broadband

Merry X-mass to all of you.
I have installed conky to monitor mainly my download via broadband. I have two question.
1. I guess there is some other means of checking it, as a screenlets can do this without conky....what it is?
2. Can I configure conky (in .conkyrc) so that it monitor my total download in the month or after I recharge my broadband(I have a prepaid broadband and hence its important!)?

I've never used conky, but gkrellm does this just fine to me: it has an internet interface chart, which can give me statistics of MB received and transmitted daily, weekly or monthly.
