character map translation issues: any links?
 

Hi -

I can't count the times I've ssh'd from here to there, telnet'ed somewhere else from there, and then su'd, or whatever the chain may be, and inevitably some character map / translation issue crops up: arrow keys don't work, or ctrl-u, color-coding, whatever.

I know there are tons of layers where these mappings get set, get translated, etc, and that there are even reasons for it. What I want to know is how to fix it in many of the common cases, and I'm wondering if anyone has any links handy on the common solutions? E.g. for shells, ssh, common text editors. I can find narrow solutions here and there, but certainly someone has compiled a FAQ on the issue? Just seems like such a common problem.

I googled around some, and happily will again, but didn't want to go down blind alleys if there's an obvious sticky somewhere. It's one of those things where I don't know the right key word to search...
