changing the path

I just installed j2re 1.5 and i am getting this error while installing azureus:

Java exec not found in PATH, starting auto-search...
ls: /usr/java: No such file or directory
OOPS, unable to locate java exec in /usr/java/ hierarchy
You need to upgrade to JRE 1.4.x or newer from http://java.sun.com

i know that java is installed in this directory /home/suhail/jre1.5.0_01. how do i change the system's path or anything else that would make my system recognise it

PATH=$PATH:/home/suhail/jre1.5.0_01

are you sure it wasn't in /home/suhail/jre1.5.0_01/bin ? if so tack on the /bin to the end, etc.
