Changing default browser

Hi!
Does anybody know how I can change the default browser in Suse 9.3 from Firefox to Opera please. Many thanks.

Here's how I would do it: (*)

Open the control center program;
Navigate to KDE Components / File Associations;
Open the "text" entry on the file associations tree;
Find "html" in that list.

You should now see a list showing "Application Preference Order", so just change that so that Firefox is at the top of the list. (it should already be there, so just move it up)

(*) There may be an easier way.

No, much to my suprise that doesn't seem to work. Not even when I put the two Firefox entries to the bottom and the two Opera entries to the top. Please don't ask why there are two because I have no idea, as it didn't seem to harm I thought I may as well leave it as it is.

Try K -> Configure your desktop -> Components -> Component Chooser -> Web Browser. Set your preferred browser here.

I'm afraid that Firefox still persists!

Still persists? Weird. The above method works reliably for me!
Maybe check you have the "File associations" set up correctly as well.
You could try putting the full path to opera in that Component Chooser box.
To find the path:
which opera
Maybe you need to logout & back in again for the change to take effect, but I doubt this.

Question

Nothing will make this change take effect!?* I'm going to have to uninstall both, then reinstall Opera as the default before reinstalling Firefox and then see what happens. Thanks all.

Having uninstalled both Firefox and Opera, I then reinstalled Opera and attempted to make that the default without Firefox being present. Unfortunately it wouldn't even do this under these circumstances, instead I was left effectively without any default browser. I'm beginning to think that there is a bug between Evolution mail and Opera as it was the lack of inter-reaction between the hyperlinks in Evolution mail and the 'default browser' that originally brought this problem to my notice. I can't think of any other way to approach this.
I have reinstalled Firefox and I'm having to use that as my default once more - which isn't much of a hardship! I just don't like being defeated this easily and unfortunately I don't have sufficient experience to mess around with the code in a circumstance such as this. Thanks again - Meanwhile back to. . . . if I should find any way I'll let you know.

I haven't used Suse, but maybe it needs some updates/patches? How does Suse do this? You could give it a try.
I think 9.3 is quite old now, maybe try a more recent distribution? Some distros are quite useless (I tried Mandriva 2006 and had so many stupid problems I went straight back to 2005LE).

Suse 9.3 is generally a trouble free distro - dare I say it - it's almost perfect. It warns you when there's an update to consider up to about three times a week, so I couldn't ignore them even if I wanted to - which would be perverse anyway!
It's not that I don't like the 'Fox', but I'm just puzzled as to why I can't change it.
The main reason I have a slight preference for Opera is that I prefer the way it handles bookmarks - as you probably know it allows you to have them all on one flat page, which makes them very easy to sort/view, especially when you have a lot of them - perhaps there's a 'Fox' extension which will also allow this? Alternatively, if I never used the 'Fox' I would frequently not have any idea what the weather was doing outside the window! It's all swings . . . It's just my inability to effect the change which bothers me. Consequently I'm still feeling .

"my inability to effect the change which bothers me"
OK, I know how you feel.
You could try creating an entirely new user. Login as this new user.
Then set "File Associations" so that opera is the default for html, making sure that on the "Embedding" tab it is set for "Show file in separate viewer".
Then K -> Configure your desktop -> Components -> Component Chooser -> Web Browser. Set opera at the top of the list.
OK everything.

Is opera now used to open html files for your new user?
If so, there's a mistake somewhere (maybe deep) in your normal user's .kde directory. The fun part will be finding it!

Thanks for the suggestion, but I suddenly have the feeling that perhaps ignorance is bliss!
