what DT or WM are you using?
if it has a config for the icons then look in
Code:
/usr/share/icons
to see what you got to pick from then add absolute path to them in the config file. this is all independent on DT WM and menu system you are using.

Code:
[Thumbnailer Entry]
TryExec=/usr/bin/ffmpegthumbnailer
Exec=/usr/bin/ffmpegthumbnailer -s %s -i %i -o %o -c png -f
MimeType=application/mxf;application/ogg;application/ram;application/sdp;application/vnd.ms-wpl;application/vnd.rn-realmedia;application/x-extension-m4a;application/x-extension-mp4;application/x-flash-video;application/x-matroska;application/x-netshow-channel;application/x-ogg;application/x-quicktimeplayer;application/x-shorten;image/vnd.rn-realpix;image/x-pict;misc/ultravox;text/x-google-video-pointer;video/3gpp;video/dv;video/fli;video/flv;video/mp2t;video/mp4;video/mp4v-es;video/mpeg;video/msvideo;video/ogg;video/quicktime;video/vivo;video/vnd.divx;video/vnd.rn-realvideo;video/vnd.vivo;video/webm;video/x-anim;video/x-avi;video/x-flc;video/x-fli;video/x-flic;video/x-flv;video/x-m4v;video/x-matroska;video/x-mpeg;video/x-ms-asf;video/x-ms-asx;video/x-msvideo;video/x-ms-wm;video/x-ms-wmv;video/x-ms-wmx;video/x-ms-wvx;video/x-nsv;video/x-ogm+ogg;video/x-theora+ogg;video/x-totem-stream;audio/x-pn-realaudio;audio/3gpp;audio/ac3;audio/AMR;audio/AMR-WB;audio/basic;audio/midi;audio/mp2;audio/mp4;audio/mpeg;audio/ogg;audio/prs.sid;audio/vnd.rn-realaudio;audio/x-aiff;audio/x-ape;audio/x-flac;audio/x-gsm;audio/x-it;audio/x-m4a;audio/x-matroska;audio/x-mod;audio/x-mp3;audio/x-mpeg;audio/x-ms-asf;audio/x-ms-asx;audio/x-ms-wax;audio/x-ms-wma;audio/x-musepack;audio/x-pn-aiff;audio/x-pn-au;audio/x-pn-wav;audio/x-pn-windows-acm;audio/x-realaudio;audio/x-real-audio;audio/x-sbc;audio/x-speex;audio/x-tta;audio/x-wav;audio/x-wavpack;audio/x-vorbis;audio/x-vorbis+ogg;audio/x-xm;application/x-flac;
#place in /usr/share/thumbnailers/pcmanfm.thumbnailer
just change the name to whatever filemager you are using.
ie.
thundar.thumbnailer

then increase the cache size. if needed.
and make sure you have ffmpegthumbnailer installed.

In dolphin you can right click and change the image.

- most file managers have an option to disable thumbnail images completely.
- a different icon theme might provide you with a more pleasant default icon.

change default thumbnail in file manager for music, movies / videos preview

Hi! Everybody

To be clear, I only want to change the default preview thumbnail of a music, movie / video file showing by default each time it is shown in a file manager, to a more permanent one, sort a screen shoot of the file played on a player of the video or movie file. I trying to take a specific screen shot of the file playing (specific scene shown on a player), or a specific picture / image I got, to show as a permanent thumbnail preview.

Thanks in advance for your time and help.

Unless he gets the source code then hacks at it until he gets it to do what he wants it to do, then he'll have to not ever apply updates to it from his repo.

Unhappy

Hi! Everybody

According to the latest answers, it seems like is hard coded into each file manager, how to display the specific thumbnail of each music, video/movie file, to bad their is no hack to do this, because at least 50% of the time it displays the wrong or weird thumbnail preview of the file . It will be nice for future option for file managers. Thanks for you time and help in advance .

ok let me get this straight. You got a video in your folder, you open up the filemanager, you see the icon image of that video, but you do not like what frame of that video it is showing?

if yes then

Quote:
By default, ‘ffmpegthumbnailer’ seeks 10% into a video for creating the thumbnail. If you want, you can change this by following the below steps.
Code:
Exec=/usr/bin/ffmpegthumbnailer -s %s -i %i -o %o -c png -f -t 30
where t = N frames to seek

http://www.hecticgeek.com/2012/12/ge...iler-cinnamon/
man
Code:
       -t<n|s>
              : time to seek to (percentage or absolute time hh:mm:ss) (default: 10%)

Hi! BW-userx

You got my side of the idea right. Any specific app that I can use to select the frame (frame image/picture shot) associated with the file (music, video/movie) in the file manager? or am i restricted by specific frame number only? My original idea was to, for video/movie play it, pause it, make it fullscreen, take a screen shot, edit the screen shot to usable size (eg. 320x200) and then inserted in the file as a permanent thumbnail to that file (music, video/movie) being previewed in any file manager. Thanks for time and help in advance.

a little googling goes a long ways,
Code:
#e.g. generate thumbnail every 45th second
ffmpeg -i ../archive/myvideofile.mp4 -f image2 -bt 20M -vf fps=1/45 thumbs/myfile%03d.jpg
key words making thumbnails from video linux

this is EXACTLY what a thumbnailer does.
(except it is not inserted in the file, but stored in a separate location.)
why is it not working as expected on your system? what's wrong with the thumbnails provided by your filemanager? which filemanager?

Hi! Ondoho

My original idea was saving a permanent thumbnail image/picture into the file, so the file manager only displays that specific image/picture. I use thunar in linux mint Sonya 18.2, but I know that if I list/display the file in another file manager of any OS, it will display an image/picture distorted or without an image at all. Your are saying, that the thumbnail is store on a diferent location of the file being preview! I thought it was embed within the file to display in any file manager. I'm kind of confuse in this one. I believe that you can have a picture tagged with a file like music, vide/movie and save it within it, I tried to do that with easytag which did save the tag, but did not changed the thumbnail view in the file manager(s) to a permanent one . Thanks for your time and help in advance.

yep: you're starting to find out how each data type (file) stores information - where mp3's have a place for an album cover, images and video's do not. the thumb nails are stored in your home dir .thumbnails hidden it is.

just delete the sub/directories and they will be re created and thumbnails added.

at most you could try looking at how the filemanager knows what image goes to what file, then use that to exploit it, create your own image you want for whatever file then attach that needed information to your new thumbnail and then put it where "they" look for it.

Hi! BW-userx

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I'm staring to get the idea now, still it will be nice to have a future or option to change the preview thumbnail. I thought I try to do that. Thanks for the time and help in advance.
