Change Opening Display Options for a pdf

Hi:

I have several pdf files that I didn't create myself, and I would like to change the default for how the file displays when it is opened (e.g. 2-up, adjust to width and such things).

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and regularly use pdfSAM, pdfChain, and pdf-Shuffler (all nice if slightly awkward programs to use, and all of which having somewhat differing abilities), and none of them seem to be able to do this.

I also looked at the man pages for pdfTK, and didn't spot anything that would seem to do that.

It seems reasonable that it can in fact be done, since several programs that I use to generate pdf files (e.g. from LibreOffice export-to-pdf) permit setting SOME of those display options and the resulting file behaves accordingly.

Does anyone have suggestions? I'm not excited about the idea of uncompressing the pdf and editing it by hand, even if I had the foggiest idea what command strings to add, but am willing to try if someone has ever done that and can explain it.

Thanks very much for any help.

I don't know of a way to change these presets for an existing PDF. A decent PDF viewer overrides them anyway and applies the user's preferences instead.

And that's what I'd recommend you: Go through the settings of your preferred PDF viewer and set the default viewing options the way you wish. Look out for a check mark or something else labeled "Override document properties" or something like that.

Hi Doc:

As it happens, I have already set my preferences for the bulk of pdf documents I view, but it just happens that I find different settings more useful for these particular documents - which is why I was attempting to change the documents.

BUT - I decided to go through the preferences in Adobe Reader 9 anyway, as I hadn't looked at them for ages. In there I found an unchecked box titled "Restore last view settings when reopeining documents."

Assuming that causes a particular document to be displayed in the same manner you left off with, I'm guessing that Reader simply saves the display information in some local config file rather than actually changing the document itself, but that would likely do what I want. I'll post back here if that turns out to be effective.

Thanks for waking me up ...

Frank
