Change Master Boot Record Load order.

Hello, i have Windows XP and Mandrake Linux 9.2 installed on my system, currently i have my computer set to boot straight to linux. I would like to change this so that my computer boots into windows xp first on the boot loader, where would i locate the text document used to change my boot sequence, and what operating system should i be using to do so? thanks for your help. I should also add that i have windows on hdd0 and linux on hdd1, the master boot record is located on my windows hard drive.

Hi Sublimehype!
I guess (since MDK 9.2) is pretty new that you are using grub as a bootloader (?)
It should show on the boot screen.
The config file for grub should be
#/boot/grub/grub.conf
(unless mdk does it's own thing like suse)

title=Gentoo 2.6.5
root (hd1,2)
kernel (hd1,0)/vmlinuz-2.6.5-gentoo-fff root=/dev/hdb3 vga=0773
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.3-gentoo-fff

title=winxp
root (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

There should be a line
default 0
It selects the default entry - so for entry #2 set it to 1 since it counts from 0 up...
Also you can change the timeout (seconds)
timeout 30 = boot after waiting for 30 seconds.

I'm also using Mandrake 9.2. You can, if you wish change the boot order through the gui tool in Mandrake called Drakboot. Click start --> Configuration --> Configure your computer--> boot --> Drakboot. The rest is not too difficult to figure out. You have to set XP as the default. Drakboot allows you to select Grub or Lilo as your boot loader.

Hope this helps.

Post a copy of your /etc/lilo.conf file. This is the file you will edit to change the boot order. There's a line "default=" up near the top....
Then you run "lilo" on the command line to update lilo.
