Change default browser to Opera
 

Hi,

I prefer using Opera under RH9 than Konqueror (i am used to the mouse gestures since I also use it under Win, and in the future i might try to share their bookmarks). I tried to change that, but there doesn't seem to be an option. In the control center> Component Chooser there isn't a field called browser. I asked this question on the usenet before and nobody managed to answer me.

Even under windows we can change it!! Should I sue the linux community for antitrust violation :) ?

IF you go into Control Centre, and look under file asssociations. (it under KDE Components)

Press the x next to text and click on html.

Their you can rearrange the preferred program for html files. Click on Opera on click move up to make it the default handler.

If opera isn't on the list just press add.

You can through File associations select what program runs when you select any type of file.

I dont use KDE but there should be two ways to do it.

I am assuming you that when you click on a html file you want opera to open it? In KDE there should be a file types (like windows) or mime types. Mime type would be text/html. Just have opera open it. Or you can right click on it and choose 'other app', then it will bring you to a screen where you can choose. This is what gnome does..kde should be similiar.

If you want to just change the web icon to opera just right click and edit it.

Yeah, opera is sweet....unbelievably fast. You can't go back to firebird, mozilla, netscape after using opera.

that thing about the "%u", you still need to use that but the newest versions of kde doesn't have that little glitch where the command will revert to the old command. you can add the "%u" option at any time.

Thank you all for your replies. Having changed the file associations, now it seems to work. Yet it looks like KMail first downloads the page to the computer and then opens it in Opera, since the address starts with file://.
Is there a way to prevent that?
Also, can I add an option so that the new page will load in a new tab? Maybe there might be a command option like
opear -newtab that will let me do that? I don't get the %u trick either? What is that for, should I do it if everything works alright?
