Change appearance of command prompt

When I open Konsole, instead of the usual "user@hostname:/home/user/$" type command prompt, it just says "bash-2.05$", and no matter what directory I'm in it doesn't change. Is it possible to set this back to the normal setting? Sometimes I forget where I am....

Thanks, that's very helpful, however I'm not quite figuring it out...

I've made up a PS1= line that I want to use, and when I enter it at the command line it works just fine. Now I'm trying to find where to put it to make that the default prompt. The link you supplied says to put it in the .bashrc file. Does it matter how or where in the file it goes? I just put it at the end of the file, exactly the way I first entered it at the prompt. However, then my kterm freaks out and won't refresh. Any help would be appreciated!
