Celeon D

I am running an Intel celeon D 3.20 ghz. And I have been trying to to install Linux on it. They all seem to install fine, but after I finish installing them and actually try to use them I get problems with it locking up. can anyone reccomend a distro for me? I'v tried just about everything I can think of. Knoppix, SUSE, berry, Ubuntu...

The CPU won't have anything to do with your problems. What other hardware are you using? Can you tell if it's the whole computer locking up or just X? If you have a few computers on a network, try pinging the IP of the linux machine after it's shat itself and see if you get a response.

My mainboard is an MSI PM8M-V with Chipset Vt8237
Ram is 1 Gb ddr
Hd 80 Gb maxtor
Nvida 5200 128mb apg
MSI Cd-Rw rom 52x

And When it locks up it freezes up and I have to turn off it's power completely. For examxple, I tried Knoppix 4.0.2. For the most part it worked ok. However, when I tried to do anything else, it'd freeze.. and, I had this problem with all sorts of stuff like burning cds and surfing the internet. So, any and all advice you're willing to offer me, would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Have you tried to find out what exactly is it freezing on. Is it a display problem or is it do with the wrong keyboard layout ? Try looking into the syslogs expecially /var/log/messages.
Are you able to work in console mode ? If yes, is this prblem related to X ? What display drivers are you using ? Are you using the NVidia drivers from nvidia.com or the nv driver which comes with the kernel as a module. You should be using nvidia binary drivers from nvidia.com.

After it freezes, restart it and post for us the output of this command:
Code:
tail -n 50 /var/log/messages

Yeah I'd love to know - have been thinking of a new laptop with a Celeon D in it.
Linux only.
