CDROM working sometimes

Hi-when I put a DVD in my cdrom drive GNOME sometimes recognizes it and KDE never does. GNOME and KDE both sometimes recognize a Data CD and they both seem to recognize a Music CD. Anyone know why?
Thanks,
Chris
Oh Yeah- I am using Fedora Core 1.0 on a Dell Inspiron 1100. I double checked to make sure it wasn't my CDROM by opening it in XP.

It depends on your entry in your /etc/fstab file.

see:
man fstab
info fstab
man mount
info mount

I'm not quite sure I understand. I actually went and ran mount mnt/cdrom and then cd mnt/cdrom; ls and it said that I had both Audio and Visual files on my cd. However, an icon did not pop up on KDE acknowledging that there was a CD in my CDROM drive. How do I change the preferences so that an icon pops up?
Also I was able to use MPlayer to play a DVD but the ran slowly and the words didn't match their mouthes. Also I wasn't able to use the menu function. Any suggestions?

Also when I click on MPlayer Open DVD it says "Couldn't open DVD device: /dev/dvd"
