Unhappy cdparanoia won't rip without -Y

Hello everyone,

I am having problems getting cdparanoia to rip a cd without invoking the -Y switch.

This is my drive (dmesg):
hdb: Samsung CD-RW/DVD-ROM SN-308B, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdb: attached ide-scsi driver.
scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
Vendor: SAMSUNG Model: CDRW/DVD SN-308B Rev: U005
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 24x/24x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12

/dev/cdrom -----> /dev/sr0

Terminal Output:
bash-2.05b# cdparanoia -vB 1-
cdparanoia III release 9.8 (March 23, 2001)
(C) 2001 Monty <> and Xiphophorus

Checking /dev/cdrom for cdrom...
Testing /dev/cdrom for cooked ioctl() interface
/dev/sr0 is not a cooked ioctl CDROM.
Testing /dev/cdrom for SCSI interface
generic device: /dev/sg0
ioctl device: /dev/sr0

Found an accessible SCSI CDROM drive.
Looking at revision of the SG interface in use...
SG interface version 3.1.25; OK.

CDROM model sensed sensed: SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SN-308B U005

Checking for SCSI emulation...
Drive is ATAPI (using SCSI host adaptor emulation)

Checking for MMC style command set...
Drive is MMC style
DMA scatter/gather table entries: 256
table entry size: 32768 bytes
maximum theoretical transfer: 3566 sectors
Setting default read size to 13 sectors (30576 bytes).

Verifying CDDA command set...
Expected command set reads OK.

Ripping from sector 32 (track 1 [0:00.00])
to sector 183309 (track 9 [6:43.69])

outputting to track01.cdda.wav

(== PROGRESS == [> | ...... 00 ] == :-P 0 ==)

At this point, the drive and cdparanoia will each stay busy, but no progress is ever made. The smiley indicator stays at :-P and will occassionally change to ;-(.

Interestingly, if I disable some of the checking with the -Y switch the cd will rip fine and produce a decent quality wav. I would though, for obvious reasons, like to be able to use all of the checking functions.

I've gone through to troubleshooting section on to no avail.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
