cd/usr/local?
Greetings Smart Masses,
Can someone help a dumb old electrician install f-prot in suse 9.2. I couldn't get past the first step.issue the following command "cd/usr/local" my shell told me no such directory exists. Shuould I replace local with home? Or what should I do. Please help. |
I think you need to do "cd" "space" "/usr/local". cd means change directory. /usr/local is the directory you want to change to.
|
try
Code:
cd /usr/local |
that helps
|
you definitely need to start reading this:
http://www.linuxcommand.org/ *EDIT* Welcome to LQ forums :) |
thanks perfect,
I did put a space between "cd" and"/" thanks for the link. I'll take all the help I can get. |
Well, here's a few:
http://www.dartmouth.edu/~rc/classes...nt_pages.shtml http://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/index.html http://rute.2038bug.com/index.html.gz Of course you don't have to read all of them, but sometimes a different point of view is clearer. |
thanks all for the excellent help. It isn't easy being an electrician in a world of geniuses. I am quite ill with windows.
|
Most of us aren't geniuses. Just people who took the same journey you're starting. If you screw things up enough times, you're bound to learn how to fix them. :D
Here's a bit of a long article about why linux is not like windows. Be aware that your success rate in linux is very dependent on your willingness to learn new things and navigate a sometimes steep learning curve. Some people who are just "ill with windows" don't succeed on linux. Not that they can't, but they don't have the willingness that is required to unlearn what they know about Windows. Anyway, welcome and happy tuxing! |
I was always under the impression that electricians were generally intelligent people and had a knack for fixing things. Probably why they're using linux. Don't have to be a genius to use linux though... actually, its pretty easy once you get the hang of it. But it helps (in finding good porn).:p

My dad was a project manager for Bell South. He was a very intelligent man. He worked on many network projects and was one of the project managers on the communications for the Florida Lottery. So when I think of some of the people who know what they are doing on computers I think of him. I have been using linux for about a year and a half. I bought several O'Reilly books including:
learning the bash shell Running Linux Linux in a nutshell Linux Pocket Reference Guide and a few others, so I am definitely commited to becoming proficient. Some things just haven't gelled quite yet. If I could sit down for a few days with someone who knew what they were doing I feel that would help emensely. |
Don't want to start a flame war but if you really want to learn linux try a less automated distro like slackware, gentoo, arch etc.
It helps a lot |
Well perfect I did partition my wife's laptop and install knoppix off of the live cd. It came with the Knoppix Hacks book from O'Reilly. I was pretty proud of that.:study: :p
|
I did the zegeniestudios survey and believe it or not Suse, which I am using was the first choice of distros on the list.
|
I'll have you know I just finished installing the driver for my nvidia card. Yes I do have a big head. Yes I can follow directions.
|
You're lucky to have an Nvidia card. If you look at my post about DRI (link in my sig), you'll see the horror stories about ATI...
As for 'gelling', all of us, even the most proficient, have 'bad hair days'. Everybody forgets something "simple" every once in awhile. Thats why this forum is here. To help. |
I was rather impressed with myself since I hadn't used the pc in several months because we went sans ADSL. I don't like dial up. You can see the what file do I load my nvidia driver into thread and experience the drama first hand.
