does anyone know a good program to rip my cd's to mp3? i use redhat 7.3

Asked all the time and most will recommend grip

If you search, you'll find most likely many other recommendations.

For command line, I endorse these for the best and cleanest (not fast) rips/encoding:

Rip with
cdparanoia

Encode with
lame

grip will act as a front end for these. Select cdparanoia and lame for ripper and encoder.

Grip is a good choice, make sure you have lame installed and specify lame in the Grip options.

uh grip and lame both don't work i use kde are you people sure its not just for gnome? i even tried switching to gnome and it won't install at all is there anything else?

grip is the best if you want a gui

You need the gnome 1.4 libraries to install it however.

grip requires that these are installed. I was just taking a guess at why you can't install grip.

Why don't you post the error messages you get when trying to install grip?

did you click on that link? it makes you download something called "startsurfing" to eliminate popups and it looks like a scam or something you must have the wrong link

If you do a full install of redhat, it is included. And will work flawlessly. If you select it as a package to be installed by redhat during installation it will install all the dependencies as well. If you try installing it afterwards I can understand difficulties. I have redhat 8 on my CS server, and it runs GRIP perfectly.

Just as a note about Redhat...

I never do a redhat set install... meaning the "workstation" "desktop" "server" install options, because there are too many things that are left out of some of the options like compilers. Since Redhat uses RPM as an install, and all RPM's are binary, I guess the see no need for thier systems to have compilers, but as we all know, you can't get EVERYTHING on RPM's. I either choose the "Install Everything" which usually is about 4.5GB total, or I manually select my packages, you will have a better more compatible system doing it that way. I personally prefer Gentoo for my main box. But the above is my experience with Redhat over the years from RH 6-9. Bla bla bla...

well when i installed redhat 7.2 i chose all the packages because as you said they don't seem to think you need to compile anything and i had problems with it before then i upgraded to 7.3 and i still can't get grip but cdparanoia is working great i don't mind the command line thing its a way to keep learning
and i got lame installed but after i used it i realized xcdroast does the same thing.. i still use lame tho because it seems faster doing it with the command than with a gui

upgrades can be really messy, I know it will be a pita, but it was worth doing a clean install in my case. I loved red hat 7.3 for a long time and it will probably always be my fave distro for its time, but it has been a long time since its glorious release. It's time to move on - get red hat 9. It has much more updated packages. Back up your stuff and do a clean install. Unless you have some specific reason for not doing it, it is worth it. If you check out my guide, I have installed a ton of apps with their deps after the install and listed them on my guide - the red hat 9 page.
I would concur that it is best to do a custom install, by rule, I usually pick a custom install and pick all the major categories except the servers. This has worked brilliantly for me.

Btw, grip worked great for me in red hat 7.3 - it is probably screwing up for you cause you did an upgrade.

well i was actually going to install redhat 9 but the iso files won't download from the redhat page and i don't want to spend the time looking somewhere else unless anyone has direct links :D and until i get disconnected from efnet i really don't want to do anything that will result in me shutting down i know its probably not a lot by some peoples standards but i've been idling on there for 300+ hours hehe.. yes i know i'm lame
