CD ripping: time to complete a disc?

I'm doing tests with ripperX I'm seeing times of about 12 1/2 minutes using a LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1S, FirmwareRev=9L08 on Debian amd64, 4 GB RAM and an Intel Core i5 750.

It's about the same with paranoia checked on or off.

How long is typical to extract and encode all the tracks from a disc?

EDIT: I found the -Z option and have sped it up significantly but I'm still curious to hear roughly what times others are seeing to rip a disc.

That does seem a little long, but it has been a very long time since I ripped a CD, so I am perhaps not the best judge. What format are you encoding into? Obviously some will take longer than others, but you do have a pretty powerful machine so I can't imagine any of them would take too long.

I ripped a couple of cd's yesterday with grip and it seems like it took about 9 - 12 minutes per disc. On windows media player does it in under 3 minutes, but it isn't creating a .wav file. So linux is writing alot more kb overall.

ripperX went in phases iirc. extract wav, then convert wav (while the drive stopped being accessed). I just use cdda2wav. Get the wavs and move on. Runs in that 5 to 15 minute range iirc. Closer to 5. But I've got a decent sound card and keep the wav, no mp3's except for encoded video for web release. 1TB HDD is like $100 these days. More than enough to hold all of my CDs (700+) uncompressed. If you're using that cddb stuff to pull track names off the web, that might account for some of the extra time as well.

Not to get too far off topic, but you really store music was WAV? Even if you have a huge HDD, there is no logical reason to keep them as WAV over FLAC, same audio quality with a considerable reduction in file size.

Though really, neither WAV nor FLAC is intended for casual playback, they are both archival formats.

I ripped over 900 cd's over the past few weeks. I didn't keep exact stats but each cd took about 3 minutes total to rip plus encode.

I have about 20 discs that ripperX couldn't pull the last track off of so I'll have to figure out some way to handle those.
