CD playing programs?
 

I am not intrested in ripping any of my audio collection, but I would like to know what are some good programs just to play them, if theres an integrated ripper im fine, as long as it can play the CD normally. GUI programs would be prefered, but I dont want any that completely rely on gnome or kde (although gtk or kde's thing is ok)

what Im trying to find is an alternative to the archaic 'workbone' program

XMMS is good. It's basicly a clone of Winamp. You can also dress it up with Winamp skins. :cool:

Grip is a cdplayer that i've seen, but i just use kscd since it's default.

how do I use XMMS as a CD player? I thought it was only an audio file player.

Yes, XMMS cannot play your media files. It only plays audio, but, that's what you asked for in the first place.

But, you can use GMPlayer for audio, mp3 and also to play video files.

how do I get XMMS to play songs off my CD, I cant seem to find a location of the 'play CD' option or whatever XMMS calls it

go to :
Options --> Preferences
and look in the input plugins and
see if you have the :
CD Audio Player
plugin in the list of available ones .

when I go to options, theres a CD player plugin there, and I click 'configure' then 'check drive..'

then it gives me this error
"Digital audio extraction test failed: Invalid argument"

The location of the cd you would want to play would be in the /mnt directory. Like /mnt/cdrom or /mnt/cdrom1. If you don't have a cdrom or cdrom1 directory then you have to make one. Just
cd /mnt then mkdir cdrom. There should be one in there though. Check your /etc/fstab too to see what device is using that mount directory ie. /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom; witch means device /dev/hdc will be using the /mnt/cdrom directory. You should be able to a play directory by right clicking on XMMS and selecting play directory.

question:

I want to use XMMS to play my CDs. It locates the songs on the CD just fine, and adds them all in queue. But whenever I play them, no sound comes out - the equalizer won't even move. Other audio mp3s on my harddrive work fine, just not CDs for some reason. Anybody else seem to run into this problem and know of a way to remedy it?

Yeah, i had that problem along time ago, but i am not sure how i fixed it. I think all i did was upgraded to the the new 2.6.2 kernel with alsa support and it worked, but not sure. What output plugins do you have installed? Also, try changing the analog to digital or vise versa in the CD Audio player options. Sorry i can't remember exactly what i did to fix that error, that was along time ago. Maybe chmod 666 what ever divise your cd player is, too.
