Cd burner freezes while using K3B
I am using Mandrake linux 10.1 official. K3B came preinstalled with mandrake and I like the program a lot. I used it and it worked fine when I had Mandrake 10.0 community. My cd burner is recognized and everything seems to work fine until I hit "start" then my cd burner will begin to spin. Usually it will spin for a second then slow down then the light will turn from green to red and then it starts burning. My problem is, it just sits there spinning and never actually starts burning. K3b locks up and I end up having to restart the computer. Any suggestions? The version of k3b is the 0.11.16. My cd burner is labeled as hdd. Thanks for all of the help.

I've been having the same problems with the K3b and SUSE 9.2 and I haven't figured it out yet. Worse yet, it seems to have hosed my ability to read from both my CD-RW and DVD drives. In other words, if I now try to view those drives via Konqueror, I get an error message. I'll be interested to see what replies you get.

Have yout tried the other cd-burning programs (e.g. xcdroast)?
Have you tried the command-line tools? It is not so complicated at all. Just do
Code:
$ mkisofs -o image.iso file1 file2 file3 directory1 directory 2 ...
$ cdrecord dev=ATAPI:0,0,0 image.iso
What happens?
You have to figure out the right device for you (ATAPI is for my laptop). You can get the info from xcdroast and I am sure from k3b too.
best,
Ott

I went into K3B and it says that my device is an ATAPI just like yours. I am not sure how to run any of the tools or anything because I am a newbie and just getting used to linux. I did get it to burn one cd. I think the problem could also have to do with the cds I am using. Maybe my burner just doesn't like them. Thanks for the quick reply.

You have to find something like 'command-promt' or 'terminal' in the menus. Gnome 2.6 has it under 'system-tools'.
It is a huge advantage to know a bit about the command line. Try e.g. commands 'ls' (list files) and 'ls -l' (show file sizes and dates).
Thereafter try to make the iso image. Choose suitable files/directories, even a single file should do.
Thereafter try cdrecord. Let me know any problem (although I am quite new in burning cd-s).
best,
Ott
