[SOLVED] Cant read or copy DVD's

Hello,

So I have bought these DVD's of the Alias TV show on the internet (Seasons 1 to 3) and I cant read them or do anything else with them. They seem original commercial DVD's (not copies) and they are not damaged in any way.

At first, I tried to rip them to my server as a backup with Handbrake and it failed. Handbrake scans the DVD and never terminates. In the Handbrake Console, I see

I tried to open the .VOB files directly with VLC, and got

and Mplayer said:

Finally I tried with GXine and it will read the DVD up to the main menu (I see the FBI warning message) and then it say:

So whats going on with these discs??????? Some sort of anti Linux encryption or protection?

Any help appreciated, all these discs are useless now... I have not tried on a windows machine and I did not try on a commercial DVD player since I dont have these for now.

Unless you can check them on another device, it is impossible to say for sure that the DVD's are not simply defective. You'll need to rule out a physical defect before you can try and diagnose the issue on the computer; you could spend weeks troubleshooting a problem that isn't on your side.

Can we assume all other DVDs work on your system?

I can read and backup all my other DVD's....

Seems to be only with the Alias DVD's.

I am 99.9% sure the DVD player on my laptop is not defective and that the Alias DVD's are not defective either, or I have 12 faulty DVD's...

Do you have libdvdcss package installed?
under Fedora, it comes from livna repository

Certainly libdvdcss is necessary for ripping encrypted DVDs. Just remember that they don't include it because it isn't legal in a number of places. However, in the US at least, keeping a single backup only for backup purposes is legal.

haha good question Sir!

I used my htpc to rip the dvd's before... A few weeks ago, I upgraded my kernel on my htpc but somehow (??!) I forgot to activate the UDF filesystem support in my .config file, resulting in my htpc no longer being able to read cd's or dvd's...

In the meantime I am using my laptop running slack13.1. I never ripped discs with this machine before so thats why I did not have libdvdcss installed.

TO be honest, I dont get why UDF is not activated by default and why using make oldconfig the option did not migrate over... Anyways, I'll have to recompile the stupid kernel (getting tired of that compile/recompile/recompile shit) so I can read discs, which is a core function of a HTPC.

That being said, it was Sooo hard to get running to the point I am right now with the miserable support between the latest Fermi Nvidia card sound controllers and Linux, and I had other problems with the TV tuner card.

I might simply install Win7 and get rid of linux alltogether. We'll see!

Well on one of my 12 DVD's, there is one I cant read at all. Even booting with this DVD in the reader wont allow the kernel to pass the read step and will loop forever trying to read the disc... I've never seen this.

Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 33

What does it means? some bug in the kernel or faulty disc?

Handbrake can do nothing about the commercial DVDs, you can try DVDshrink, it is another free dvd ripper software ...

Check the disk for scratches, if there are scratches, that's probably why.

Yeah looks more like a damaged disc than anything else...

Hb was able to backup all other 11 discs so I wouldn't blame software.

what puzzle me is the fact that the kernel goes wild at boot time when trying to read the disc.. The kernel devs should put some kind of loop counter of some sort so the messages I posted above are not seen on a perpetual basis resulting in a kernel that will never finish booting...

I'll try looking for surface damage.

It probably wotn help with a new disc, but try giving the DVD a wash in warm soapy water, then dry it off.

I've had quite a few CDs and DVDs with read errors work 100% after a good wash.

I agree, and I always clean disks before ripping them. I mean I wouldn't want a copy that is messed up because of some dust or scratches.

Another easy way to backup is this command:

mplayer dvd://1 -dumpstream -dumpfile dump.vob

and it will dump all streams from the dvd into dump.vob. Then you can take just the video and correct language audio and put them together with ffmpeg, then delete dump.vob.
