Cant play DVD's

Ok, I Just got a dvd-r/cdrw drive today, to replace my nonworking cdrw drive.

I cant play DVDs, I know the drive works, I tested it on windows xp.

On linux, I can read cd's and dvds.

the problem I have is that when-ever I try to play a dvd in VLC or MPlayer it doesn't work.

both players try opening /dev/dvd

when I installed the new drive and started linux, Kudzu didnt run.

I think the system doesnt know its a dvd drive, and still using the previous cdrw drivers.

What brand DVD-RW? What distro are you using? What does it say in your fstab? What error message does mplayer give? What options are on your kernel boot command line?

ok, I got it workin, when i checked the hardware browser, and looked at the device part it said, "/dev/hdb"

so I entered that into vlc the dvd started playing.

and the error message from before was, "couldnt open device: /dev/dvd"

I'm using FC2, just like it says under my name on the side of this message.

As root make a symbolic link to the drive "ln -s hdb /dev/cdrom" & then everything should be able to find the drive.
