Cant login apart from the root user.
 

Hey all. For some reason I cant login to gnome as anyone else apart from the root user, after a *few* package upgrades... Erm, 483 package upgrades that is, upgrading fedora core 2 to fedora core 3, or gnome 2.8 if you like.

Anyway, is there some logfile I can take a poke at that might tell me why this infernal machine keeps playing up? Many thanks in advance.

I remeber back a year ago when I was just learning Linux,
I tried making it so anybody could write to
/etc/profile, so that I could easily fix the PATH varible as I wanted to (that is, before I knew all the other nifty ways to do this.). And, when I did this, no body except root would be able to log in. Just a thought...

aha, I see my first post was unclear. I can actually login, and start the xserver, but gnome freezes just after the panel loads. Thats my problem.

Did you have any luck with this? I have FC2 installed, updated a few packages the other night and now I can log in as root or another user, but when I do the keyboard doesn't work as a simple user. I can open apps and a terminal but the keyboard doesn't do anything. Only root user seems to create output.

During my upgrade, I went to xorg, from xfree. Afterwards I learnt that the ATI drivers are not compatible with xorg, or vice versa. I believe this problem has been fixed now, with subsecuent updates, though.

I also am running FC3 did the INITIAL RH updates, and after I logged out I was unable to login to my system as any user other then r00t. I use gnome as my desktop, and my KERNAL IS 2.6-10. I get a pop up message when I try to login: "AUTHENTICATION FAILED". I tried changing password, and group memberships, then I deleted the user account, and tried to re-create one, and vie gui it hung the system. I have some more tricks, but I wanted to post before I tried some other things.
