Cant get onto net properly!

Hi there all, and thankyou for having me at this lovely place.

I'm totally sick of Windows and want to learn how to use linux.
I'm a newb as well.

Ok heres the problem, well sort of. I installed Suse 10 yesterday, I have Suse running, everything is fine except i cant access the internet properly. I can access web pages with ip addresses (ie) my isp's. I rang my isp but they do not help people with linux, apparently "because it isnt popular enough". I have adsl+2 and it is frustrating that i cant access the internet without typing in ip addresses. I have put dns on in the router.

Another question when i type the @ symbol and # symbol they dont show up, how do i fix this?

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

It sounds like you aren't able to do DNS lookups properly. Two likely causes:

1. you haven't set your system up to look at any DNS's - you should probably use your ISP's name servers; or

2. your firewall is blocking DNS lookups - port 53

I'm afraid I don't use SuSe, so I can't direct you too well. I think you'll find your name servers in resolv.conf, probably under /etc, but there's bound to be a way to do it from your GUI.

Lightbulb Failed connection

I have run into this problem. First make sure server can support Linux.
Not all do! Try alternate DNS address..
Hope this helps

have you tried adding the DNS entries to /etc/resolv.conf in the following manner

nameserver <Primary DNS>
nameserver <Secondary DNS>

try it and post results!
