Ok, Im using zipslack, and I have various reasons to use it, so please no "why are you..." questions.
Now, I got X11 and the misc fonts needed to run it from slackware.com
they are installed, and the FAQ says I need to run xf86config. problem is it's not a command. I think its a text file, but Im not sure. it wont work wihtout doing it, it gives me a multi-colored screen and locks up.
Ive never done an installation of X myself, its usually handeled by an installer, so please help.
BTW, I didnt check if this was posted before because there are probably 100s of Xwindow questions, and it would take forever to search them all.
thanks.
edit:
forgot to say, could someone give me a dumbbed down tutorial of what Im supposed to do now? thanks a bunch.
oh, yes, and i forgot to say that im on zipslack 10 if thats needed.
I haven't installed zipslack since 9. But you probably need to run xorgconfig or something - %s/xf86/xorg/g, basically. Except zipslack should just crank with the framebuffer. Anyway - just try that config command and feed in your specs. ('xorgcfg -textmode' might be the easiest.)
-- Oh yeah - I know you want to get it going but you shouldn't bump before 24 hours. People will get to you.
Ok, I configure it... although now when I try to run startx, X, or xinit it says
Cant read lock file /tmp/.X0-lock
I dont think this was installed, as I did this
# cd /tmp
# dir
and that file did not show up. nothing similar did either.
strangely enough though, I can start X window and TWM if I execute xorgcfg
however the other commands dont work. I got my packages from slackware.com, were they missing something? I installed only the base package and the misc fonts. do I need something else?
sorry for the trouble, but I have no Idea what im doin or what is wrong.
Sorry about taking so long. My system crashed while I was replying to you and I've been rebuilding my dusty gentoo system because I'm going to try that again for awhile. You've got everything you need unless you plan on compiling X apps and then you'll need the 'devel' tgz. But that's not the problem here. However, I'm not sure what the problem is. May be a permissions thing (my usual blame-victim). The dot in front of the X0-lock means it's hidden, so you'll need 'ls -a' to see it. And you'll need 'ls -al' to see the permissions. Also check /tmp's perms.
