Thumbs up Canon MF624cw laser printer setup with Ubuntu 16.04

There sure is a lot of information here. I am porting over my Windows system to Linux. I have a Canon Wireless Color MF624cw printer, and have no idea how to make it work with my Linux 16.04 system. I have an HP touchscreen, 1 T harddrive, 8 Gig RAM. 50% is partitioned for Linux, and 50% partitioned to Windows. I doubt I will use windows.

Canon says they don't support Linux. How can I make this work? I am dumber than dirt when it comes to computers. At 73, my time is ?? As a Notary Public, I need to get this working. Can anyone help?

Did not work

Ardvark, I downloaded the .dmg file for that printer, and I got a message that looked like the following:

It said I had to process the file with something else. This is not a Mac computer. It is a linux computer. I am confused. Joe

Hi Joe...

Please disregard what I previously wrote. To download and install the driver for your printer, please follow these instructions...

1. Click on the link here. On that page, click on "Drivers & Downloads" next to where it says "Specifications" in the red box. Then, next to where it says "Operating Systems," choose Linux 32 or 64 bit, depending upon the architecture of your copy of Ubuntu 16.04. If you don't know, open a terminal and copy and paste the following command into the terminal and press "Enter"...

Code:
uname -a
If you don't understand the results, please ask us. After choosing the version of Linux, click on the box below that says "Drivers." Click "Select" to the right, then check the box that says "I have read and agree to the terms of the Disclaimer and wish to continue with the download" (you might want to read it to know what you're agreeing to,) and then click the red (initially gray) box that says "Download." See if you can download the file to your desktop.

2. If you weren't able to download the file to your desktop, please locate it. It will say "Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V320_us_EN.tar.gz" and most likely will be found in your "Downloads" directory. Regardless of location, double click on the file to extract it. You should be offered a choice where to extract it to, choose the "Desktop." You should now see a folder on your desktop that has the same name as the archive folder you downloaded. Please note that you may be required to connect the printer to your computer using a USB cable during the installation.

3. Open a terminal and copy and paste these commands into it. Hit "Enter" after each one...

Code:
cd Desktop
Then...

Code:
cd Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V320_us_EN
Then...

Code:
sudo chmod 777 install.sh
Then...

Code:
sudo ./install.sh
Disclaimer: Be careful with commands including "su" or "sudo" especially, as it will essentially allow root access to your system. Mistakes could possibly damage or even destroy your OS.

At that point it should ask you if you want to continue the installation. Press "y" and then "Enter." Let us know how it goes...

Hopefully, the install will go without a hitch. Someone else may have to help you with the wireless aspect if it doesn't configure automatically. Also, the scanner feature might be a separate process but we can try and cover that once you get the printer installed, if needed.

Regards...

Thumbs up

ardvark71,

I have not had time to go through it thoroughly, but the attached README suggests that certain additional software may be needed for Ubuntu 16.04.

It may be pulled in automatically or maybe not.

Excellent post.

Hi...

I did notice that, I'm hoping that if extra files are needed, the installer will take care of that. If not, perhaps they can be easily found and installed.

OK! Still not working. I have the output file produced, and will review it. It mentions certain files and libraries that it did not find. I will check into that.
I do have a dual boot Windows and Linux, so the software installed fine on the Windows side. If I need to, I will use that, but would rather get the drivers working on the linux side. I can't stand Windows... If I can't figure all this out, I will come back and post my need for more assistance here. Better if I can figure it out on my own though, I think! Joe

I think I need a lot of help with cups....

Ardvark71,
After reviewing the output of the commands you gave me, the repeating theme was that most of the failures were due to one file that was missing, so I downloaded that one, and installed it successfully. It was libglade2-0. cndrvcups-common, and others, failed because of that file.
Then I tried to complete the steps anew, with no success. The "cd Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V320_us_EN" did not work, because there is no directory with that name. There is a file called the same though. So I went to the next line, "sudo chmod 777 install.sh", and that could not find a file called "install.sh",although there are many files by that name. So of course the command to execute the "install.sh" did not work either.

I know I am doing something out of ignorance. Have any suggestions? I am including the output of the original install...

Joe ????

If this installer is run under earlier or later distributions, the installation of additional system libraries may be necessary after driver installation is complete.

Hi Joe...

Is the readout you provided in your last post from when you initially tried to install the driver, before you installed the dependencies?

Regards...

Unhappy Printer Has To Work.

Yes, that was the initial install. I downloaded the libglade2-0 file, and installed it successfully. Still does not work though. I have no idea where to go next. It prints all day long wirelessly if I print from my ipad or iphone. But I can not get drivers that will work. I am constantly forced to reboot into the windows OS in order to use the functionality of this printer. Nice printer, but I can't stand Windows. I hope I can find something that will work. Thanks for all you do Ardvark71. God Bless You for your heart, and your sincerity. Joe

Angry Not Going There

Ardvark71, We are not going there, but I am certain that it is close to truth. The absence of God would be worse than anything you will ever experience. Once a soul sees God in all His beauty, eternal separation will be the worse hell that anyone could go through. All the rest of the suffering is human descriptions of the worst of the worst. I believe it will be worse than that, and eternal has nothing to do with time. It is, after all, forever!

Hi Joe...

I'm guessing this is because, due to the missing dependencies, the driver was left unconfigured. Please run the installer again and post the resulting output. If you need to, just follow my instructions above all over again.

Indeed and along with that, everything of God on this Earth that everyone sees, feels and touches (such as love, friendship, nature, etc.) will not be present there. It (hell) is a place devoid of God and everything of and from Him. And one of the tragic aspects of this, is that for the folks who are there (whom will eventually be "transferred" to the lake of fire,) there is no hope because as you mentioned, it doesn't end. It's for eternity.

Regards...

Hi...

Awesome! I'm glad you were able to at least get the printer working.

What distribution and version of Linux are you using? Also, please open a terminal and post the results of...

Code:
lsusb
Thanks!
